The transformation from the industrial society to knowledge based economic society makes the technology and knowledge innovation to be the core factor of the economic increase. The transformation changes the structure of the labour force which leads to the change in the relationship with work and learning. In the background of the fast developing of knowledge and technology, the former learning and working style as 'learning for working' should combine the new principle as 'learning with working'. Leaning is more a dynamic proceed than a static state, which raise the new topic inhuman resource development------workplace learning. This study concerns the workplace learning of some representative knowledge basedlabour force------the software engineers in IT fields. This study includes two parts. The first part introduces the research background, research design and literature reviews. The research design contains the definition of research question, sample choosing principles, ways of data collection and analyses, etc. The second part presents the research findings, which contains two sections. Chapter three shows the finding in their knowledge and skills development procedures by grounded theory methods, which concretely concentrates on what they learn, how they learn, and factors influences the learning. Chapter four reveals the professional identity procedure by focus analyses ways. Chapter five uses the communities of practice theory to consider the learning development model from the practical point. The second section summarizes the experience in the researching procedures. This study conducts a further research on the base of some international findings which concentrates on the workplace learning of some specific objects as software engineers in IT fields, and presents my own constructive understanding on this research question from three different angles, knowledge and skills development, social and societal angles as professional identity, and the communities of practice. Hope to give some support to the breakthrough of the breeding model of the IT talents.
