The popular science readings in modern China is the important carrier of the mordern social science education. In a sense, the history of popular science readings evolves an important part for Chinese education towards modernize. Therefore , the paper attempts to refract the history of modernization of Chinese education by studying the popular science readings in modern China from a new angle of view.There are four parts of this paper as below:The first part is the introduction. It includes the background and the goal, the object and the questions, the present situation and the method, the innovation and the insufficient of the paper.The second part studies the history of the popular science readings in modern China. It is the main body of the paper, including the following three chapters:The first chapter studies mainly the general picture, the characteristics and effects of the popular science readings from 1840 to 1919 — the time of the science initiation. During this time, the popular science readings was characterized by the following ones: Chinese and foreigners cooperated to translate the popular science readings; the content was made of all kinds of subjects which is practical and basical; textbook was the main style and the number of volumes was very great; science fiction turns up as a new literature style; the main readers were first the outstanding intellectuals and then students.The second chapter studies mainly the general picture, the characteristic and effects of the popular science readings from 1919 to 1932 — the period of science popularization. During this time, the characteristic of popular science readings are listed as follows: the writer were mainly scientists ,the contents was systematic; science fairy tale as a new literature style turns up which develops a new space of the popular science readings; China publishing house rises; children and the public become the main readers.The third chapter studies mainly the general picture, the characteristic and effects of the popular science readings from 1932 to 1949 which is the time of science popularity. During this time, the characteristics of popular science readings are listed as follows: there were three main publishing machineries; the publish faced to common people; the science sketch turned up as a new literature style; many popular science readings from Soviet Union and other countries were translated; the first generation of popular science readings writers appeared.The third part is the conclusion. The conclusion summarizes the development history of the popular science readings in modern China. On the other hand, we can draw some enlightenment by integrating the history and the present situation of the creation and publish and release for popular science readings,.The last part is the appendix. This part is very important because it is what the author tries to innovate. This part includes three appendixes. They are booklists that belong to three different history periods. The three appendixes includes 1311 types of popular science readings in modern China which are found by the author.
