The paper firstly briefly introduces the background, evolution and present of the Geography Information System (GIS). And WebGIS is the feature of GIS. The development of software is not for repeat of work, but for the reuse. The component-based development pattern greatly embodies and makes best use of the idea of reuse. Base on the deep analysis and comparisons of these main WebGIS software produced home or broad, with the combination of the GIS development platform, RealGIS's, system characters, the paper gives the idea of applying the component-based approaches to design and implement the system(SOG, Server of GIS). RealGIS is a large GIS development platform, produced by Intelligent Software Laboratory of Zhejiang University, which provides the supports for both second-development and large, comprehensive GIS related applications. And SOG is a kind of application on the platform. The purpose of design and implementation of SOG is to build a system that has good structure, high expansibility and be able to run steady and efficiently. As the internet application goes deeper and broader, especially for the popularity of intemet-GIS products, the traditional WebGIS software is facing these there three challenges: high concurrent visit, massive map data publish and multi-client support. The paper gives the way we deal with the massive map data publish problem. And combined with the problem of Multiple Data Sources, special emphasis is put on the design and implementation of the buffer mechanicals, and introduced how to design the configurations for it to work smoothly. And finally the last chapter summaries the technical characters and the inadequate of SOG, and we look forward the future of the development of SOG.
