With the development of Internet and multimedia technologies, the demand of the integrated broadband multimedia services grows quite a lot. As a result, different access methods and equipments are employed in different services to better accord with the application environments and designed goals. Due to their different transmission characteristics and terminal equipments, the compatible encoding standards and target bit-rates also differ a lot, which practically make the transcoding technologies essential in the whole system when obtaining some resources with incompatible capabilities. Besides, as a multimedia file is always consist of a video segment and an audio segment, how to combine the transcoded video one with the previous audio one becomes another issue in the system layer. Therefore, some key technologies of the transcoding system are studied in our paper. Firstly, we introduce the general structures and characteristics of different video transcoding systems. And technologies of synchronization and multiplexing in system layer are also included. Then, a transcoding strategy is presented. The video sequence is classified as one of the three different categories according to its motion and spatial characteristics. Different transcoding methods are then adopted to better adapt to the video sequence. The strategy is proved to achieve quite good performance via experimental results. After that, a simple but effective scheme is present to resynchronize and remultiplex the transcended video and audio streams. Also, experimental results prove our method correct and effective. At last, we point out the remained problems and the future work.Besides, as H.264/AVC standard appears highly competive due to its high...
