Going with the development of information technology and improvement of network speed, video application has been walking into our life. Especially that the third generation mobile communication technology will provide us enough bandwidth for video communication, so in this way, the 3G time will be the video communication time. Under this background, we also need a video coder which should have high efficiency and good adaptability of various networks. And in this way, the video application will become more and more widely. On Mar 2003, a new international video coding standard was released, and which was jointly being made by ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) and ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), named as joint video team (JVT). And this video coding standard was known as ITU-T Recommendation H.264 and as ISO/IEC 14496(MPEG-4) Part 10. In this standard, so many new techniques were used. Using this technique, about 50% bits can be saved, just compared with the old video coding standard H.263 or MPEG-4. Also it has good adaptability to network for its 2-layer design structure. And this video coding standard has been paid much attention from research area and industry all through, but the high-complexity of this standard has become as one of the major factor of influencing its application in real-time video field. So it is so important to research the structure and implementation based on the high efficient TMS320DM642 DSP of H.264.In this paper, firstly, I analyzed the structure of H.264; Then, I introduced the key technologies of each module of H.264. Based on the research of these key technologies and feature of TMS320DM642, the work of transplanting H.264 coder to DSP platform was done in the first place. And in the following, the work of optimizing H.264 coder was done on the project layer, arithmetic layer, C language layer and assemble language layer. At last, a real-time H.264 coder was completed, which based on DSP platform.
