Through analyzing programing timetables printed on China Tv Guide between 1990 and 2004, this study focuses on changes in television programmes of CCTV-1 ( China Central Television -1 ) in this period, trying to find out social agents which leads to these changes. Firstly, using time length of each television programme genre throughout a week and its ratio of television broadcasting hours (i.e. time length of all programmes) as indicators, the study reveals basic changing trends of eight different television programme genres including news programmes, movies & teleplays ( or television dramas), entertainment programmes, programmes for kids/women/the old/students/workers, sports programmes, information & sevice, programmes for social education, and documentary. Secondly, on the combination of statistics data with theories of media sociology, the author tries to interpret these trends. In the third part of this thesis, the author inquires deep resaons of television programme changes and finds that four major social agents— political & economic systems, science & technology, mass culture and media professionals' subjective initiative, are powerful impulses to these changes. At the end of this thesis, it also discusses the questions the author has founded during the research and suggestions for further study.
