This thesis summarizes the evolution and improvement of contemporary western rhetoric from the classical to the new rhetoric, and discusses the progress of The Christian Science Monitor which has a "unique influence". It also considers the whole year's editorials of this newspaper in 2005 as a closed text, and primarily analyzes it in figure of speech and symbol of power of discourse using quantitative and content analysis. The author deems that as a banner and soul of media, the commentary is a barometer and an opinion guide in social transformation. There is practical significance for not only analyzing commentary in figure of speech, but also probing the social function and symbol of power as well as ideology that rhetoric establishes. This thesis has some creativity in cross-language and cross-discipline aspects through revealing the use of rhetoric to commentary in western media. It brings on a good many enlightenment and reference to advance Chinese foreign intercourse and communication.
