The GPS is now more and more used in vehicle navigation systems. To meet the goal of being portable, the development of embedded mobile navigation system becomes a hot project in the field of GPS navigation system. The embedded GPS map matching system is essentially a combination application system of GPS localization technology and electronic map technology on embedded system.With the request of the higher localization precision and lower system cost, many combination navigation methods are introduced to the GPS navigation. The GPS/MM combination navigation technology based on GIS (Geography Information System) is one of the important research areas.Firstly, this paper systematically analyzed the ARM embedded system which is installed with GPS/MM system, then introduced the components of ARM embedded system, the basic development environments and the embedded OS deployment techniques. This thesis discussed the components and the theory of GPS localization system, showing how to connect GPS receiver with ARM embedded system through serial port and get data from GPS receiver. Secondly, this thesis analyzed the MapInfo electronic map's format and gave the method to display the electronic map on ARM embedded system. Thirdly, this thesis explains the cause of GPS error and presents the Map Matching algorithm to solve the problem. Finally, this paper implements an algorithm of optimal route selecting strategy according to the rules of transportation after analyzing the algorithm of Dijktra.
