Today's Optical Transport Networks can not meet the requirements for economy and high efficiency of Telecommunication Operators. It also can not fully use the network resources. Under the driving force of intensive competition market economy, technology development and data-center services, the concept of intelligent optical networks is proposed. Among them, Automatic Switched Optical Networks (ASON) represents the mainstream of Intelligent Optical Networks. This article has conducted the thorough research on the ASON survivability technology, especially on the sharing restoration routing algorithm. In the first chapter, the development of ASON and is introduced first. Then the research progresses in international standardization organizations and domestic companies are reviewed briefly. In the following part, the system architecture of ASON is given in detail. Generally speaking, it can be classified into three kinds of plan, four kinds of interface, two kinds of evolving model and three kinds of connection. In the second chapter, we mainly studied the ASON intelligent core—Control Plan, as well as the realization technology system of the control plan—GMPLS. Then main protocols of the GMPLS: signal protocol, route protocol and link management protocol are introduced. In the third chapter, new problems in survivability of ASON, and the protection and restoration based on GMPLS proposed by IETF are discussed. Then a load balanced multi-service path sharing restoration algorithm based on layered-graph is firstly proposed. The block performance and resource utilization factor of this algorithm has carried on simulation later. The simulation results indicate that the algorithm can make fully use of the sharing of backup path and reduce the block rate efficiently. In the last chapter, we focus on the multi-layer survivability of intelligent optical networks, and proposed an interlayer backup resource sharing scheme. This scheme is based on multi-service path sharing restoration algprithm and interlayer sharing restoration to restore optical layer and IP layer. It can effectively solve the distribution problem of backup resource in each layer and shortens the recovery time of IP router breakdown.
