The dependence on communication networks in various aspects of human society has been becoming more and more heavily in information age. With the development of WDM technologies, the potential for enormous bandwidth in a single optical fiber has been exploited and WDM will become the core of the next generation backbone networks. Due to the high-capacity, over several gigabits per second, of each wavelength channel, the failures of fiber links or nodes might lead a vast number of services to be blocked. Therefore, the network survivability has become more urgent. Recently, many kinds of transmission technologies, including IP, MPLS, SDH as well as WDM, have been integrated in transmission network to set up Multi-layer Transmission Network to complete the respective functions. According to the statement above, Multi-layer Network Survivability Technology is introduced to solve how to achieve different survivability technology in different network layer. With the possible combination and interaction between different survivability technologies in the system, it has provided end-to-end and overall effective survivability for Multi-layer Transmission Network. Just because of the reasons described, the research about such technology seems to be both important and valuable.Survivability Technology of top layer, based on IP/MPLS over WDM network, is concentrated on three items, including 1+1 protection, FRR protection and Restoration. Besides that, ODU protection, Restoration, Shared Mesh protection and 1+1 protection, which are contained in Survivability Technology of bot??layer, are also discussed. Moreover, the relative detailed description of all algorithms, simulation results and analysis of some algorithms are presented in such paper. Both core data structure and simulation code that rely on the simulation platform are stated in the fifth chapter. Finally, a summary, including further study for future, is offered in the end.By the computer simulation and analysis of the algorithms, the correctness of the algorithms have been verified. On the other hand, their values in application fields are also demonstrated.
