With the increase of the communication between the human beings, and the development of the society, people aren't satisfied with communication in simple way, such as voice, word and data. And they are eager to communicate with face to face. So, multimedia communication has become to be a development tendency of current information society.This paper mainly deals with research and design of a multimedia communication terminal based on PNX1500.It includes many techniques, such as hardware design of PNX1500, analysis of TM3260, high-speed digital design and its applications. First, are briefly introducing the general situation of multimedia communications, and the development of video compression, thus through the analysis on hardware arithmetic capability of the multimedia platform and system resources, the project about multimedia communication terminal based on PNX1500 is chosen. And then separately expounding the function modules of the PNX1500, analyzing the kernel structure of TM3260; introducing periphicial IC, include video decoder SAA7118, video encoder SAA7104, audio A/D converter PCM1802 and audio D/A converter PCM1744; and then particularizing the design of boot module, video and audio interfaces, as well as storage interfaces of the whole system and PCI interface. The third part is discussing the principle of high-speed digital design, mainly analyzing Power System, Transmission Line Theory and the PCB layout specification based on it. At last is prospecting the practical application of the system.
