With the rapid development of the Internet technologies and the swift growth of services, a great demand for network resource has been emerging, and at the same time the network is becoming more and more complicated. The increasing users and applications make the Internet overloaded, which leads to its performance degradation. Therefore, the Internet performance measurement becomes an urgent problem. In this thesis, we focus on Internet end-to-end performance measurement. Starting with the basic principles of network measurement, we make a study of the network measurement methods and classification. And then we come to the Internet performance metrics architecture, which includes the content of the architecture, its layered model and testing point. Meanwhile, the ways we measure and analyze the variety of metrics are elaborated systematically. After that, a measurement system is introduced, with its standard components and corresponding functions. Then, we put emphasis on how to implement a software to measure Internet end-to-end performance, from requirement analysis to preliminary design, and then to detailed design and coding. The software is to be deployed on two Internet ends respectively, with the ability to communicate with each other. It measures the performance between these two ends, including packet loss rate, packet delay, delay jitter, and packet error rate. The testing results are presented, as well, to validate the software.
