Research Of End-to-end Performance Measurement Technologies At Application Level

With the Internet developing fast and applications expanding continuously, it becomes more and more important of network performance management and monitoring. Traditional network management software usually focuses on network equipments, instead of user's applications. Howerver, what the end user concern is not the detail of the network service realization, but application performance. Thus, on a basis of traditional netswork management software, the next generation transits to and emphasizes application performance and management QOS. By measureing end -to-end application performance, the network environment that the customer application traveled can be evaluated, therefore on one hand guiding the customer to choose the best moment to use the best network resources, and on the other providing ISP with scientific reference for effective management, valid controling, and scientific designing.This paper studyies the key techniques of measureing end-to-end application performance.The main work is described as follows:Methodology combining active measurement with application probing can compensate the deficiency of passive measurement and device-based management used in traditional network management system; A scalable performance metric definition frame is proposed, which can solve instability problem caused by diverse applications; And an architecture is presented, which can monitor end-to-end user applications and achieve good scalability and operability.On this foundation, a software for end-to-end application performance measurement, is designed and implemented. The software, as a module of NetTurbo, a distributed performance measurement and analysis system can on-line monitor network performance and application states, collect measured realtime data, provide the excrescent warning,carry on statisticsing the analytical evaluation to the network applications and the resources, find the position of network performance bottleneck , provide accurate basis for broadband network to be managed and optimized.Streaming media is a kind of broadband application, which is sensitive to bandrate, jitter, delay and packet loss.
