WCDMA is mainstream technology of 3G. It is different from the traditional TDMA. WCDMA uses self-interference CDMA technology. The coverage, capacity and QoS of radio networks has self-correlation speciality. Controlling the interference of the networks is the key to guarantee the QoS, coverage and capacity. So compared with the traditional 2G networks, WCDMA network planning has different particularity and complexity. Compared with 2G networks, the WCDMA network planning has much more complexity. So the network planning is very important in the forepart of the network construction. It relates to the cost, performance and QoS of the future networks.Five parts are presented in the paper. Part Ⅰ is the exordium, just introducing the background of the study and the summary of radio networks planning. Part Ⅱ is of the WCDMA system structure, introducing the network structure and interface of UMTS, also describing the key technology of WCDMA, such as capacity, coverage, handover, power control. Part Ⅲ focuses on radio network planning of WCDMA system, including its planning flow, speciality, significance, and its relation and difference from the GSM network planning. At the same time, we discuss some core problems of the network planning, such as link budget, model emendation, coverage planning, capacity planning ,parameter planning and pilot pollution. Part Ⅳ is of the effect of the Geographic Information System in the network planning and the software development on the MapInfo platform. Particularly, we introduce the Maplnfo system and MapBasic computer language, development environment and some details in the development. Part Ⅴ discusses the Monte Carlo simulation in the WCDMA capacity planning.
