The Research Of Streaming ASF Media Format Through RTSP Protocol And Implementation Of VCR Functions At Stream Media Server

Microsoft, RealNetworks and Apple these three most influential companies in streaming media industry all have released network streaming media solutions, the products of these three companies are not compatible with each other. MP4 format is adopted in mpeg-4 standard; Apple's Darwin Streaming Server supports streaming MP4; ASF format is a streaming file format designed by Microsoft, Microsoft's Windows Media Services only supports streaming to asf file; RealNetworks adopts RM format.Whereas there is a lack of streaming media servers that support multiple media formats simultaneously, especially lack of servers supporting MP4 and ASF formats. That is why the streaming media server is designed in this thesis. RTSP (Real Time stream protocol) is the upper-layer protocol for controlling streaming process, it plays the role of remote controller at server-end and user-end. The streaming media server products of RealNetworks and Apple support well to this protocol. RTSP therefore is recognized by more and more enterprises. The Windows Media Services of Microsoft always use MMS (Microsoft Media Server) as ASF streaming control protocol. Unill Windows Media Services 9 was released, it started to support RTSP. But it adopts the method of transmitting composite stream to stream ASF media format, to doing so the user-end is required to acknowledge ASF format.
