The engineering plastic is one kind of important materials. In recent years along with expansion of the engineering plastics demands and enhancement of the high polymer material research and development ability, the lacking of engineering plastics database becomes a bottleneck of the plastic profession development and the engineering plastics application promotion. So the construction of engineering plastics database become urgent needs.The paper mainly studies how to design and implement Web-based engineering plastics database which belongs to Chemistry Comprehensive Databases supported by Chinese Academy of Sciences: Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry.The purpose of the paper is to find a proper method of transforming manual type data into relation data. Through a series of procedure such as collection, analysis of data, data quality control, and so on, the paper finishes the database retrieval system of engineering plastics based on Web. At the same time, the system offers searching function of plastics properties, through the function users can find proper materials with great efficiency.The paper is divided into five parts:First of all, this paper discusses the background of the paper. Through comparing and analyzing of current situation of engineering plastics databases both at home and abroad, the paper points out the existing problems of domestic engineering plastics database.Secondly, this paper analyzes the workflow and user's behavior. Through systematic demand analysis, the paper point out the functions the system should possess.Thirdly, this paper discusses the differences between Client/Server structure mode and Browse/Server structure mode, and it explains the reasons of choosing Browse/Server structure mode. In this part the paper also introduces developing instruments.Fourthly, this paper expounds the design of database and functions.
