Manufacturing is tending to larger scale and more specialization. Along with the use of information technology in manufacturing, product developing is becoming scattered. In that background, distributed collaborative design is thought a significant method to improve efficiency of product developing between different areas. Yet, an effective and Web based distributed resource of design management system is one of important technology in actualizing distributed collaborative design. After analyzing the development trend of engineering materials database management system,and incorporating development of Web service technique while considering implementation environment of enterprise,the writer proposed and developed a Web service-based engineering materials database system. Provide enterprises a supporting platform of product design resources,which can make these resources be shared through network. Prepare for the future works of concurrent engineering,and even dynamic alliance. This thesis is taking engineering materials database as research project. Firstly, after analyzing the requirements of manufacturing enterprises, the writer proposed the application of Web service technique in this system. Secondly, the techniques concerned are introduced including Web database and Web service technique. Then, the method of system realization and the application of Web service is studied deeply. Meantime, a service-oriented architecture based engineering materials database system is realized based on .NET framework and Oracle database. And then, taking the "engineering material database management system" as example, which is a sub-system of "Tianyu IntePLM" of Wuhan Tianyu Software Limited company, the writer introduces its development and application. Finally, the whole thesis is summarized. The development of Web service technique and key points of future work are expected.
