A true 3D volumetric display is a completely new 3D image display technique, which generates voxels in the 3D data field directly. The advantages of its image space are multi-angle, full-vision and can be observed by many persons at the same time. The physical depth cues are clear and the image is more reasonable and applicable. It can be widely used in the fields of medicine and military affairs and so on. The two basic classes of the true 3D volumetric display are swept volume technique and static volume technique. In this paper the latter is discussed in detail.Firstly, this paper analyzes and compares the different 3D display techniques synthetically and the control architecture of static volume display system is built. Then this paper discusses how to choose the image space material and the voxel activation process and optical layout of such a system. The relation of voxel space arrangement and incidence beam intensity to voxel lightness is focused. Secondly, with the advanced software 3D_DOCTOR, this paper builds the 3D image model from the 2D image of CT. Processed by special software, the information of 3D image can be recognized by OpenGL which is used to transform and render the 3D image in the 2D plane to simulate the imaging process and static volume display characteristic visually and realistically. Finally, combining physical character of beam, this paper builds mathematical model of dead zone and the relationships between dead-zone and the quality of image are analyzed by changing the angle of two intersectant beams and the voxel generation positions. The solution of dead zone is proposed to eliminate the blur and improve the definition and resolution of image.The whole paper crosses the idea that solves the abstract physical problems in mathematical methods. The research methods supply theoretic basis for the key technology of static volume display,which has excellent realistic signification for its engineering realization.
