Facing the fierce market competition of the third generation of mobilecommunication in the future, how to construct fast, high-quality and flexibleWCDMA network with less investment for GSM operators is a focus thatthey must pay enough attention.As to the problems above,This paper makes systematic analysis aboutthe network evolution from GSM to 3G in several aspects such as the corenetwork,radio network etc ,and the three kinds of evolution strategies aboutthe core network.Combining the different access technologies between GSM andWCDMA networks, this paper proposes several strategies about theconverged networks between GSM and WCDMA.and systematic analysis isalso made for the seamless network evolution from GSM to 3G. This paperhas also proposes the means to solve that problems ,such as GGG gatewaysolution .As a whole, the aim of this paper is to realize the seamless networkcoverage of the third generation network. Because the network evolutionfrom GSM to 3G is inevitable in the terms of the technology and the abilityto offer this service。 the current GSM has developed into a quite ripe stage , which isequipped with stable network of good communication quality and has alarge number of mobile subscribers. With the development of technologyand the services supplied, 3G is undoubtedly a trend for GSM to evolve,the problems of GSM evolving to 3G smoothly and seamlessly is how toprotect the current investments, and it is a selectable standard for theequipments of the core network to evolve which will guarantee the currentGSM network to operate steadily.The core network of 3G will evolve to the whole IP network structurebased on the network compatibility from GSM/GPRS as well as based onthe technologies of TDM,ATM,IP.This paper is put forward under this great background. that is, theconvergence technology and gateway solution of GSM/3G seamlessnetwork. Firstly, this paper introduces the basic principle of the thirdgeneration of mobile communication , including its important parts and thenanalyzes its systematic structure, key technology and main characteristics ofthe three kinds of basic major systems of the third generation of mobilecommunication such as CDMA2000 , TD-SCDMA and WCDMA indetail.besides , This paper also compares and analyzes its characteristicsdepending on the mentioned above. The first of the paper lays a theoreticalfoundation for the following analysis.Then which kind of technological routes is most suitable for thefundamental realities of our country are analyzed from eight respects .That is, TD-SCDMA has some advantages in the aspects of technologicalroutes and is suitable for China's actual conditions, and the Chinesegovernment supports TD-SCDMA.but there still exists some problems as to the technical maturity andthe consummation degree, and especially the industry development. AndWCDMA is a 3G standard presented by the GSM association, 80 % of themobile communication in the world adopts GSM standard, which hasalready constituted the potential WCDMA market on a large scale in thefuture. CDMA2000 has its own advantages too, especially in the realizationof technology, industrialization, etc. So, so far the problems about thetechnology is not merely the only one to be thought over, three kinds ofschemes have respective advantages and disadvantages, but can't offer asingle perfect scheme.So this paper is based on all these theories, that is, theconvergence technology and gateway solution of GSM / 3G seamlessnetwork.Before explaining this paper in detail, this paper provides the overallsolution of 3G/2G network convergence technology. In the initial stage ofthe development of 3G network, the operators should support 3Gsubscribers to first select the 3G network, In the middle and later periods ofthe development of the 3G network , when a relatively large number ofsubscribers will migrate to the 3G network , the operators should support theaccess control function for the 3G subscribers to hand over to the 2G , andthe control strategy is based on the load or the services supplied and how tobalance the loads between the two networks.Then this paper will discuss the seamless network solution of theGSM/WCDMA in detail. This paper starts to illustrate its viewpoint of theintegrative solution schemes of seamless network from Ericsson, thendiscusses the ways of realization, as well as, discuss all details about theconverged networks, and the characteristics of each protocol edition aboutthe core network of GSM/GPRS and WCDMA.This paper also analyzes the evolution schemes of the core networkon the basis of all these theories.and also proposes three kind of differentevolving strategies about the core network.According to the current network, this paper introduces theadvantages and disadvantages of all kinds of standards, and it has putforward the evolution strategies suitable for the current networks.As to the converged network of WCDMA and TD-SCDMA, thefollowing conclusion are made through carefully analyzing the fiveimportant aspects. The converged networks improve the efficiency of thespectrum and reduce the costs from the operators.While analyzing the network convergence technology of the thirdgeneration of mobile communication, the converged network ofGSM/WCDMA , GSM/CDMA2000, WCDMA/TD-SCDMA arerespectively compared , including their advantages and disadvantages, anddraw the conclusion that the predominance for the future converged networkis that the operators will do their best to protect the new investment from 2Gto 3G, and at the same time assure the investment will guarantee that thefuture network will evolve smoothly to the whole IP and can not comeacross a certain obstacle.As for the introduction of 3G network, the operators should do theirbest to reduce the influences on the current GSM/GPRS network;theservices supplied for the end subscribers can emigrate to the 3G networkfrom GSM smoothly. This paper also analyses the convergence technologyand its solution of GSM / CDMA2000 seamless network.This paper begins with the GSM 1X technology from the GaoTongCommunication Company.this technology supports the roaming betweenG&C networks .And then this paper introduces two important solution . that is MSNand GGG solution.the former is suitable for installing a new CDMAnetwork,In order to solve the roaming problems among two-waysubscribers.GGG gateway solution sets up the special-purpose gateway betweenGSM and CDMA networks and converts the protocol of MAP and IS-41.anddo not need to alter the core element of the current GSM and CDMAnetwork. by doing this ,the operators will realize the interactive transmissionabout the messages from the subscribers' locations.Through the explanation developed by the ZTE company, this paperhas drawn an important conclusion to solve this scheme , that is we willapplicate the GGG gateway solution in order to solve the problems of theseamless network convergency in very large areas.This paper supplies the current network conditions of LiaoNing MobileCorporation Limited and at the same time applies the theories mentionedabove to solve the actual conditions of the Corporation. This paper drawsa conclusion that the operators may applicate the GGG gateway solution insome very large areas, and applicate the superposed network solution insome small areas.The commercial process of GSM evolving to 3G has just started,and cann't make sure how it will develop. At present the research on theconvergence technology and gateway solution of GSM / 3G seamlessnetwork is becoming the focus by the operators. The schemes proposedabove should be applicable at some stages during some periods of the 3Gnetwork development ,As to the evolution of the 3G network, the operators may balance thecost beween the cost invested in the newly built network and the costinvested in the existing networks according to the actual resources in thelocal areas. At the same time the operators may select the best solution,which is easy to implement and is extensible. This is the purpose of thispaper.
