Computer provides new solutions to the protection of the precious MoGao grotto relic. This paper discusses how to use database technique, image processing and image analyzing technique to realize the storage and retrieval for the MoGao grottos' archive data and fresco images. It includes three parts:The first part describes the design and implementation of a web-based information management system, through which one can easily query and maintain all kinds of grottos' archive data. The system adopts the CGI technique and designs a middle server to solve the stateless problem of CGI. The middle server runs between the CGI processes and the DBMS, making the system tri-tier. The system also uses HTML templates as an optimization.The second part discusses the data structure of the grottos' 3D information. The author uses point coordinates table to store the grottos' geometry information and use surface-point and surface-surface relation table to store the grottos' topology information. The multi-resolution table is used to store every layer of multi-resolution image in order to obtain high respond speed in navigation stage.After systematically introducing the relative work in the content-based image retrieval (CBIR) field, the third part explores several CBIR techniques used to retrieve fresco image.
