With the arrival of information age, the dependence on communication is strengthened day by day. The network requirement for high speed, high survivability makes the optical network with high speed develop for the one with high survivability. Especially in some natural disaster or war condition, the requirements for network survivability are more outstanding. What a survivability of the network is, and how to improve the survivability of optical network based on Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) are research focuses in this paper.Resilient Packet Ring is a new type of MAC protocol, which has high survivability. RPR is an important development technology in future metropolitan area network (MAN). But the datas on single RPR ring are unable to be transmitted across the ring, and it is relatively weak to set up a large scale network, and in single-ring structure the survivability will be obviously reduced as the node counts increase, and interconnection based on networkbridge with other network is unable to reflect the superiority of RPR. In the condition of natural disaster or war, the single RPR ring was broken to small section easily. One network with high survivability, expandable and fully reflect the technological superiority of RPR is in need.This paper first introduces what a survivability of the network is, and summarizes the definition of survivability of the network, as well as analyzes how to construct a high survivability optical network according to the definition. Combining with the high survivability of RPR, the paper also introduces a algorithm-ISH(Integrated Self-Healing ) which can raise RPR survivability, and analyses its characteristic. The interconnection solutions for multi-ring of RPR with high survivability has been brought forward according to the surviving nature of single RPR ring, and the corresponding frame format has been expanded, as well as topologic algorithms has been presented, and system structure for crossing node has also been designed. The solution has good compatibility with standard single RPR ring. The network solution is patented at present.Finally, this paper has carried on simulation using network software OPNET, and has designed multi-ring transmitting node and simulated its transmitting performance briefly. The feasibility of the network solution has been verified, and the technological basis has been offered for carrying on the network for the system in next step.
