As a new self-luminous flat panel display technology,field emission display(FED) has great potential for development, with the advantages of high display-quality of CRT and low power consumption of LCD. Fuzhou University has been engaged in the research of the printable FED with low work function for many years and has developed the 25-inch printable FED which can display color video.A new"sub-row"gray-scale modulating method is presented aiming at the characteristic of self-developed FED. In this method, data transfer and display take place at the same time. It is the first time that driving chip used by PDP is applied to the FED panel.By adopting the new IC and the novel driving method, the developed grey scale modulator achieve high flexbility , stability and high integration.The circuit system includes CycloneTM FPGA from ALTERA and STV7610 from ST Microelectronic.With the capability of generating two kinds of modulating waveform, it has the advantages of flexible configuration, high display-quality,high integration and low cost.FPGA design is based on the Quartusâ…ˇplatform. Data transforming and the system controlling are achieved by using single FPGA. The programmable feature of FPGA makes the system more flexible and more scalable.Finally, the anti-jamming system is discussed.Through simulation analysis and experiment on signal integrity,the method of improving stability of the circuit is presented.Circuit testing proves that the"sub-row"gray-scale modulating method is suitable for our printable FED with low work.The designed circuit has been applied to our FED sample which can display VGA format video with 256 gray-scale and brightness of 400 cd/m2. The new method extends and innovates the FED gray-scale modulating. Since now the dedicated FED driver IC is rare in the market,it would be of significance for promoting the development of Fed driving-circuit technology.Moreover, a novel method is also proposed to using PDP driving IC to perform the traditional PWM modulation .The shared platform is also discussed.Besides the circuit design and program, in the paper, according to the typical equivalent pixel unit circuit , analyze the key parameter of the circuit by the support of theory formula deduction,analysis and simulation.It's favorable to improve the high-frequence property of FED sample and enhance the display quality.
