In the information society, display technologies play an important role in various fields. The further development of display technologies will create more social wealth, so the high performance and low-cost display technology is becoming the new hot spot in the21th material scientific research. Carbon nanotubes (CNT) have high ratio of length-diameter, large specific surface area, unique chemical properties and good electrical conductivity, etc, which become the preferred new materials in the display field. Carbon nanotubes have great application in many areas, such as capacitors, battery electrodes, semiconductor devices, composite materials, etc.In this paper, the origin, the classification, the nature and the application of carbon nanotubes in various fields and the theory of the field electron emission are introduced in detail.the method of preparation of carbon nanotubes mainly include the chemical vapor deposition method, arc discharge and laser ablation method, specifically the chemical vapor deposition method are introduced in the paper. We also introduce the method of sample characterization, which include the scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy and so on.In this paper, we prepare the CNT film cathodes through screen-printing process, which has the advantage of simple, good emission effects and appropriating for mass production. In the paper, we describe the entire process of making the carbon nanotube field emission display, and emphasis the improving of the performance of the field emission display. The method of the plasma treatment and3M tape processing are discussed in detail, then we do the analysis and comparison of the field emission properties after the method of treatment. In order to achieve the optimal solution for the preparation of carbon nanotube field emission display, we do the comparison of field emission properties of different types of film cathode, which was made of different type of carbon nanotubes.The research on this topic also remained some shortage, such as low current density, poor light uniformity and weak stability, etc. In order to enable production of carbon nanotube field emission display, we us will improve the field emission properties gradually through improving the formulation and processes of the screen-printing, improving the current stability and strengthening the luminous uniformity.
