Electric power industry is the footstone of national economy and social development. The degree of electrization is an important indication to evaluate the modernization level of a country. Along with the social development, more and more high requirement to the quality and reliability of power generation is brought forward. To get these targets, solutions should be found in power generation process."Generation and Distribution Separation","Competitive Electricity Pricing", and"Same Network, Same Quality and Same Price"are the essential direction of electric system reform. Therefore, the electric generation enterprises must reduce their cost to win a better position in the market.Under such a background, this paper illustrates the design and application of Symphony system in Shajiao A power plant, and discusses a pattern of the control system modernization for the old large power generation enterprise, the improvement of unit efficiency and automation degree, and the optimization of plant management. The basic concepts of this pattern are: The control system should be advanced and reliable in technology, the type of control system of all units should be the same; Different advanced control policy, comprehensive optimization of control concept, and canonical unit maintenance are required; at last, the enterprise consequently gets stronger, and the operation cost gets reduced.There are five units in Shajiao A power plant, and all of them use the same control system from the same supplier. In phaseⅠ, 3 times 200MW units achive the target of"three units, one control room", and in phaseⅡ, 2 times 300MW units achive the target of"two units, one control room". Therefore, the regulation and pattern of management of all the units get consistent. Furtheremore, the most important subsystems are integrated into unit control system, and many advanced control technologies are implenmented. Subsequently, visible economic effect has been achieved by the successful implemention of these plocies and technologies in the plant.In one word, the pattern of Shajiao A power plant is a valuable reference to other large thermal power plant, no matter new or old.
