Since 1990s, virtual reality technique has been one of the fashionable research field in computer science. Virtual walkthrough system is the main technique in virtual reality and it has a promising future. But the problem is virtual reality can only be worked on expensive graphics workstation and need a long time, namely, it is difficulty to be widely applied. The thesis focuses on the study and implement of virtual roaming system based on desk system by using the example of Harbin Engineering University on microcomputer. The main works are as followed:1. Review the meaning, characteristics, present researches of virtual reality. In addition, analyze the existing problems of virtual reality in real-time roaming system. Finally, give the methods to solve those problems.2. Put forward the virtual system structure, frame and its platform of software and hardware. In addition, describe the functions and algorithms of every parts in the system.3. Do the research of several optimized methods and each kind of scene object construction in the system used to construct the emphasis point. Produced the dynamic scene and the texture, optimize the environment texture method.4. Improve the rending and displaying algorithms about virtual roaming system. Add the new technology of virtual reality to rending algorithm in order to enhanced the rending efficiency.5. Finally, the system of virtual campus based on the desktop system is given.
