The visualization of 3D data sets is a multi-disciplinary subject. It relates to the knowledge of signal processing, computer graphics and digital image processing and itc. In the field of medicine, industry, military, meteorology and archaeology, the technology of 3D data sets visualization play an important role. It's key technology lies in data analysis and data processing and the method of 3D visualization. This paper carry out analysis and research on the 2D data and 3D data defined in spatial domain based on experiment and make a summary on the methods of visualization of 3D data sets. The main work and achievements are as following:The analysis on the 2D data and 3D data defined in spatial domain and the discussion on the geometry processing, filtering processing and segmentation of data have been achieved. 3D volume data is the foundation of the visualization of 3D data sets. Any form of volume data should be obtained from 2D data directly or indirectly. The technology of the processing on 2D data comes of age. We could convert the existing volume data into 2D data before data preprocessing. However, the relativity among the voxels in volume data make us do much more research on the processing of 3D volume data. According to the different visualization methods and the different drawing modes of the graphics or image, the methods of 3D data sets visualization should be classified as geometry based visualization and image based visualization.SCILAB 3D reconstruction toolbox (S3DLAB) has been designed and implemented. The character of SCILAB as a scientific computing free software and the function of the toolbox are mainly considered in the design process of S3DLAB. The 3D data sets visualization platform (VolView) has been designed and implemented again. The reconstructed framework and class library really set a certain value on the platform in practical application and research. However, as a research-oriented platform its functions should be improved to be perfect.
