The development of Grid technologies enable large-scale sharing of resources within formal or informal consortia of individuals and/or institutions: what are sometimes called virtual organizations. In these settings, the discovery, characterization, and monitoring of resources, services, and computations can be challenging due to the considerable diversity, large numbers, dynamic behavior, and geographical distribution of the entities in which a user might be interested. Hence, Grid Resource Information Services (GRIS) are a vital part of any Grid software infrastructure, providing services such as fault detection, performance analysis, performance forecast, fault recovery, and schedule, and so on. Accurate obtaining, effective managing and efficient retrieving of resource information are the key technologies in GRIS.In this paper, we study two key technologies. The first one is GMA, which is the standard architecture of grid resource monitoring system. The second one is WMI technology which is based on WBEM specifications. Then, we propose a method to organizing and managing grid resources in a hierarchical manner based on GMA architecture. A windows oriented grid resource sensor service is designed and implemented with WMI technology, and the archive services and directory services in each layer are implemented with relational database and multi-thread approach. The paper also discusses the hierarchical management and backup mechanism of directory service and proposes an approach by distributing them to different layers. Finally, we implement a general grid resources information service system on windows platform.The grid resource information service system we designed in this paper is using a hierarchical management method; this makes the system to be scalability. It hidden the characteristic of distribute of resources information, providing a global view to the resources in the grid, and make the developers acknowledging the running status of each resources in the grid. We also provide two user interfaces, one is an obvious web page, it faces to ordinary users and provides them resources information by using obvious number and charts; the other one is web service, it provides a second developing interface to senior users. The prototype we designed here has been applied in the project of National Geology Grid, National Geology Spatial Information Grid, City Spatial Information Integrated Application Service System.
