Laser-Diode-pumped solid-state laser (DPSSL) is an important branch of lasertechnology. Compared with traditional laser, DPSSL is more advantageous on theaspects of weight, volume, conversion efficiency of electro-optical, life-span and stability.Continuous wave, Q-switching and mode-locking operation has been achieved byDPSSL which has been used widely in the fields of material processing, medicaltreatment, optical instrument, fundamental researches and so on.And then Diode-pumped (LD) all-solid-state lasers have come center stage in thefield of lasers. Nd3+ doped laser which pumped by LD is a hot topic in laser researchfield, and researchers now focus on finding some new crystals to improve the existedcrystals and explore new laser emission wavelength. Nd:GdYVO4 is based on Nd:YVO4and Nd:GdVO4. It is similar with them, but it has some own characteristics. Itsabsorption cross-section is bigger than Nd:GdVO4, but smaller than Nd:YVO4. Itsabsorption coefficient is higher than Nd:GdVO4, absorption FWHM in 808.5nm iswider than Nd:GdVO4. thermal conductivity is higher than Nd:YVO4,but its emissioncross-section is relatively smaller and its upper level lifetime is comparatively longer .soit has advantages on pulse-pumped laser. In one word, it is important to compareNd:GdYVO4 with Nd:YVO4, it will help us find out the crystal's characteristics deeplyand lead us to find some new crystals.The dissertation gives a comparatively complete theoretical explanation of the laseroutput and the influence of thermal effect according to the accurate experiment dataobtained by making comparison on the basic frequency laser output, the performance ofintra-cavity frequency doubled and the thermal effect of crystal between Nd:YVO4 andNd:GdYVO4. The main contents can be summarized as follows:1. At the beginning, it gives us a generalization of the history, presents situationand the prospect of all-solid-state lasers.2. Introduce the function of solid-state laser, the main characteristics of lasercrystal, the design of cavity and so on. Based on the equation of velocity, analyse thelevel structure of Nd:YVO4 and Nd:GdYVO4 .3. The experimental comparison is made on the basic frequency lasercharacteristics of Nd:YVO4 and Nd:GdYVO4, and the relevant analyses is giventheoretically.4. Compare the frequency doubled characteristics between Nd:YVO4 andNd:GdYVO4,.and give the relevant analyses theoretically.5. Compare the thermal effect between Nd:YVO4 and Nd:GdYVO4, and theexplanation is give by building a theoretical model. As a result, the experimental data iscoincident with the theoretical analyses.6. Evaluate the characteristics of Nd:YVO4 and Nd:GdYVO4.synthetically. Getthe conclusion that Nd:YVO4 is better than Nd:GdYVO4 in main laser index.
