Nowadays, the techniques of digital character animation become the primary bottleneck of high quality games and cartoons. The main work of this thesis is to explore the key techniques in each step of 3D digital character animation industry, including skeleton extraction, capture based motion retargeting, real-time rendering, and so on. We analyze deeply into the algorithm, and improve on them. This thesis is organized as follows:In the first chapter, we introduce our research motivation, the current state of the art and the brief description of this work.In the second chapter, we deeply discuss the techniques of 3D digital character animation, and present a new method of skeleton extraction based on model division, which provides the way to use motion-captured data to drive all the 3D models. In the third chapter, we introduce the techniques of motion retargeting, and present a new algorithm of real-time skin deformation driven by skeleton, which solve the problem of joint collapse and distortion. This new algorithm is global and real-time, and is the same with joints with any connectivity. We provide user interfaces of both mouse and script. In the fourth chapter, we probe into the techniques of abiotical character animation driven by motion-captured data, and present the method of data driven paper character animation. In the fifth chapter, we dive deeply into the techniques of character motion path editing, and improve on the algorithm which can generate character animation on the path with any length and shape. We also present the new solution of foot-skate cleanup. In the sixth chapter, we discuss the techniques of 3D real-time rendering of complex indoor scene, and analyze the method to speedup the frame rate from system development experience. We also present a new algorithm of collision detectionbetween deformable objects, which is based on the algorithm of rigid body.Lastly, we conclude the thesis, and discuss the future application of our research.
