Ontology emerged as only a philosophical concept. Being introduced into the fields of artificial intelligence, knowledge engineering, and information management since 1990s, the concept of ontology is broadened. Ontology now refers to the description of concepts and the relations between them in a certain field. Through the descriptions of the relations between objects, ontology defines the semantic meaning of the objects. By the uniform expression of ontology knowledge, ontology clarifies many misunderstandings of the concepts in the field. Therefore, the co-understanding and exchange of the object in the same field or even between different fields become possible.Nowadays, due to the misunderstandings among the offer of the biology literature, the demander of the biology literature, and the creator of the web knowledge management system in the field of biology literature, the rapid exchange of the digitalized biology literature without misunderstands on the web is greatly restricted, this has become the bottleneck of realizing the web knowledge management system for the biology literature. The purpose of this thesis is to apply the ontology theory to the field of biology literature. Through using the same ontology in the save-subsystem and retrieve-subsystem, the common understanding among the offer of the biology literature, the demander ofthe biology literature, and the creator is achieved. Thus, the web knowledge management system for the biology literature based on the ontology is realized. The main contributions of this paper are as follows:Based on the subject word resources in the field of biology literature, the procedure of constructing the ontology of biology literature is studied, and the method of constructing the ontology of biology literature is presented. The ontology for the Paleontology literature as a special case is realized. The method reuses the subject word resources in the field of biology literature on one hand. On the other hand, it uses frame mechanism to express the biology literature, and uses OWL to express the terminal ontology. The method makes the procedure of constructing the ontology of the biology literature more simply, releases the involvement of field experts, makes good use of the OWL inference mechanism, and is good for the evolvement and reusing of the ontology.After analyzing the two kinds of problems in the automatic index process, which is based on the subject word in the field of biology literature, an automatic index mode among the biology literatures based on ontology is put forward. The new subsystem presented in this thesis adopts ontology theory, and inherits the subject word-based system as well. Therefore, the subsystem benefits from both the advantage of the ontology and subject word. Thus, the enhancement of the biology literature recall in the new subsystem is realized.By analyzing the main steps of the retrieve of biology literature, a new retrieval mode based on the ontology of biology literature is proposed. The new retrieval mode is realized in the different level based on OWL. The retrieval method effectively uses the OWL inference mechanism. A retieval example is also demonstrated in the thesis.Finally, A detailed test plan for the automatic index subsystem isproduced. The test results indicate that the introduction of the ontology of biology literature in the automatic index subsystem is helpful to the enhancement of the recall.Overall, the theory and method of ontology is introduced into the field of biology literature comprehensively and systematically. Through designing and constructing the ontology for the biology literature, the web knowledge management system for the biology literature based on the ontology is established. This sets a good example to the application of ontology in the field of biology literature.
