As the core technology of the third wave of the computing revolution, the middleware technology evolves in two primary directions: the grid computing and the pervasive computing. The former is called as " Middleware of Middleware" , which strengthen the ability of middleware to integrate applications, while the latter is to expand the middleware to much wider application environment.The Internet Communications Engine(Ice) is an object-oriented middleware platform developed by ZeroC, Inc.. Based on the study of the source code of Ice, this paper analyses the architecture of Ice logical function in a systemic and clear way. It also analyses the implementation principle of each function modular and cracks the key implementation technologies of Ice. A"Transport protocol Replaceable Architecture"is presented, and its rationality is verified by the experiment of replacing the original protocol on the transport layer with COM protocol. A bidirectional gateway based on "Ice/CORBA inter-operation" is proposed and implemented. The feasibility of Ice inter-operated with multiple domains and other middleware are discussed."Transport protocol Replaceable Architecture" deals with the core problems of applying the Ice to the pervasive environment, key technologies of the grid computing based on "Ice/CORBA interoperation" is also studied. The results of this paper were adopted and applied in a national defense pre-research project named as "Navy Integrated Network Management System" which has passed this year.
