Sensor network is a novel technology about acquiring and processinginformation. It is a new research field of computer science and technology. Because ofits high importance in many applications, sensor network becomes a new researchhotspot. This thesis firstly introduces the architecture of wirelesss sensor networks, explains and forecasts some valuable applications. Next, some routing protocols insensor networks are presented. The author analyzes the energy efficiency of singlehop and multi-hop networks using direct communication protocol, discusses theprotocol LEACH in detail and designs a heterogeneous network model. The authoralso formulates the energy consumption and estimates the average lifetime of singlehop homogeneous network, multi-hop homogeneous network and single hopheterogeneous network. In addition, the author shows how to allocate the energy ofnodes, discusses the lifetime of sensor networks with varying number of clustersusing simulation and proposes some main parameters influencing the lifetime ofsensor networks, which can be used in network design. In the end, we summarize some researches on energy management in sensornetworks and discuss some future works.
