Nowadays networks develop towards larger, more distributed and more heterogeneous, it results diversity of network devices and complexity of network environment, current centralized network management systems based on the platform suffer from problems such as insufficient reliability, lower performance, complex resource allocation and poor security. As a result, distributed network management systems have been adopted, in which there are several managers cooperating each other to monitor, interpret and control the network resource effectively and timely. Therefore the distributed network management becomes a research hotspot currently. This paper introduces the concepts of network management, analyzes the features and limitations of centralized network management systems at first. Then the advantages and the developing trends of distributed network management systems, and the requirements and actuality of the distributed computing platform are discussed from three aspects of the function distribution, the dynamic management and the entity autonomy. Through the analysis and comparison to the object-oriented distributed computing platform and the Mobile Agent-based computing platform, we put forward a viewpoint that the Mobile Agent technology is very good for supporting the development of distributed network management systems. The architecture and key techniques of Mobile Agent system are analyzed in detail. Finally, two kinds of practical network management applications using Mobile Agent technology are implemented, which are used to monitor network operating status and to collect SNMP parameters, and the theoretical and experimental results are analyzed. It can be concluded that the network management system using Mobile Agent technology has better performance and development prospect than the traditional network management system using Client/Server model.
