With the development of the multi-medium and networks technology, people has put forward the higher requirement at quality dimension and application in digital image . The digital image compression technology will be continue to play an essential role in applied science in the future. As for the huge amount of image-data included in computerized data, how to effectively handle and process the image-data is exclusively vital to it's future application faced on commonly accepted norms. Now the JPEG stationary picture compressing standard has a good compressing effect on middle and high compressing rate. But there exists a serious diamond effect at low compressing rate. On the other side , JPEG standard can not very well make the needs transmitting images by networks at low compressing rate.In order to solve the mentioned above issue, the international standard organization(ISO) has laid down the new generation stationary picture compression standard—The JPEG2000(serial number is IOS-15444).This essay is mainly concerned with the demonstration and analysis about this new image compression norm?JPEG2000.The essay , first of all, based on the fundamental principle of image compression, deal with the chief approach to the processing technology and the research on image compression. And then in the light of wavelet theory, the principles, functions and the coding approach of JPEG2000 are systematically demonstrated and analyzed in the essay and analyzed the Region of Interest (ROI) coding methods in detail. At last compareing the compression effect between JPEG and JPEG2000.
