Medical image is a very important basis for clinical diagnosis. How to compress the medical image more efficiently with its specific characteristics is one of hot issues in the filed of image compression. Medical image compression needs good image quality and high compression ratio. JPEG2000, the emerging image compression standard, has improved compression performance. JPEG2000, which is very suitable for medical image compression, supports the functions such as region of interest coding, rate control for code stream and progressive transmission. The support of JPEG2000 in DICOM 3.0 standard promotes the application of JPEG2000 in medical image compression.The medical image compression with JPEG2000 is studied in this paper firstly, the basic theory of medical image compression is introduced; Secondly, wavelet transform is studied, which is the key technology in JPEG2000, and its good performance is proved by experiment. What's more, JPEG2000 standard is studied. JPEG2000 is suitable for medical image compression because of its characteristics. The coding process of JPEG2000, region of interest coding are studied and an improved method is supposed ; In the end, the function of compression and coding of DICOM file in the medical image processing software is achieved, which supports several image formats.
