To save the participatory democracy tradition , by the influence of Communitarianism , since the beginning of the 1990s , an increasing number of media organizations in the United States have started to practice the reform of the public affair report model, which is called public or civic journalism movement by the media researcher in American . The reform has been advocated by many journalists , readers and audiences . The reform of the public affair report model and the media's consciousness of responsibility have brought on drastic debate , even come into being the expert study of public journalism .In this thesis, chapter 1 describes the progress and the background of public journalism movement, as the media power is centralized , and the media is intently influenced by the commercial profit, the decline of the public news report makes the people who are deeply influenced by journalism lose the interest about public affair and the capability of judgement. So the public life and democracy culture has declined gradually in the U.S.A. which has the highly developed journalism. Actually, public journalism movement is a critique about the society environment and a return to the traditional society on mind . Chapter 2 summarizes the special reform model of public journalism movement , and explain the influence of public journalism movement on American society and journalism with examples .Public journalism emphasizes that journalism should maintain the duties of a watch dog and add the duties of a guide dog, help people figure out what kind of roles they could play in a democracy to maintain the public life . Chapter 3 reviews the idea of public journalism , and deems the communitarianism , which is the chief topic of American politics philosophy , as the origin of public jounalsim idea . The main idea of public journalism emphasizes that the priority of common good should substitute the priority of right. Public journalism theory continues and reinforces the society responsibility theory . Chapter 4 tries to find out the use of reference of the public journalism idea and the practice skills to assist on domestic journalism , public journalism theory could help domestic journalism strengthen the civic public spirit and build the harmonious and healthy society .
