The construction of learning environment to facilitate student-centered learning has been the main direction of education reform in recent years."Teaching of autonomous learning under web and multimedia circumstance"in English that the author constructs also comes from this perspective.The present study focuses on the dialectical relationship between the learner and the instructor under web and multimedia circumstance, the pedagogical theories on autonomous learning, different factors and roles in its practice, and the construction of the autonomous English learning under web and multimedia circumstance.The theoretical bases of the present study are constructivism and bi-principal theory. The teaching of autonomous study is the unity of teaching and learning; the unity of learning and cognition; the unity of learning the knowledge, developing ability and personality. In order to test and verify the feasibility of this mode, the author investigates the teaching quality and some relative experiment on teaching results. According to the research findings, the author makes discussions on four aspects. Firstly, the autonomous teaching affects students'consciousness as principal part. Secondly it affects students'interest in English learning. Thirdly, it affects students'autonomous learning ability. Fourthly, it affects students'academic record.The research results show that the teaching of autonomous study enjoys great advantages over the traditional teaching method. But this teaching mode requires the support from web and multimedia. Because the web and multimedia teaching circumstance can create flexible learning environments, establish various kinds of communication platforms, provide plentiful learning researches and broaden autonomous space, which, therefore leads to the transfer from the tradition teaching method to the autonomous teaching method.As to the web and multimedia circumstance of English study, the author analyzes some ways of implementing the teaching of autonomous study in high schools, explores the ways of teaching autonomous learning assisted by web and multimedia under controlled/open circumstances, and discusses the role of some websites, web-papers and web schools in English learning and some problems with them. Finally, the author puts forward her suggestions about further development of the web resources and multimedia in the teaching of autonomous learning of English.
