With the development and combination of digital television technology and Internet multimedia service, the market needs urgently a kind of STB (Set-Top Box) based on the Internet protocol connection—IP-STB to provide the direct interaction between the users and the increasing digital content service on the Internet.Embedded Linux is an embedded operating system, which can apply in many kinds of hardware and its source code is open. Embedded Linux also includes the excellent networking functions, modularization design, micro-kernel, and more merits like such things. Therefore embedded Linux is very suitable to be the operating system of embedded system. uClinux is a branch of embedded Linux which specially designed for NO-MMU CPU. Combining the IP-STB project of Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., we design and implement an IP-STB based on the embedded uClinux system, which is the key component of the IPTV system.Firstly, this thesis introduces the concept, functions, status and development trend of the IP-STB, explains the system structure of the IPTV system, studies the key technologies of the IP-STB, mainly including the grphic display technology, the streaming media and the embedded operating system technology. Secondly, this thesis describes the detailed device characteristics, design restrictions, design idea of the IP-STB, the hardware system and the conditional access system (CAS). Then, it presents the software and hardware structure, working steps, bootloader frame, flash layout and integrated development environment of the IP-STB on the basis of the process which above mentioned. Thirdly, this thesis emphatically analyzes the interfaces between the IP-STB with the content service system in the IPTV system, which include the vedio on demand, multicast, unicast time-shift and multicast time-shift. The knowledge which realated to the system structure of the MPEG2 TS (Transport Stream) and the standard of the ISMA (Internet Streaming Media Alliance) are recommended. And then, the design andimplementation of the play control module in the IP-STB are discussed. Lastly, we have tested the function and performance of the IP-STB. The results show that the IP-STB runs steadily and touches the expected object.In the end of this thesis, summery is derived, which points out the merits, shortcomings and future work of this design, and prospects the future of the IP-STB.
