Time shift TV (TSTV) and TV of Yesterday (TVoY) are the two of the key and essential value added services in the IPTV solution. This thesis focuses on the detailed design and it also make a great sense to introduce and analyze the whole architecture and flow of Nokia Siemens Networks Home Entertainment Solution. It's a good reference for the future IPTV evolution.The feature involves in the whole components of the IPTV solution from STB to backend server. Time shift TV means the end user can use remote controller to pause or rewind current live TV program and also can fast forward until the end of the recorded channel. Then the system will automatically switch back to normal IPTV mode. TV of Yesterday means the end user can watch the TV program of yesterday which is identical to video on demand by playing the recorded video files. So whatever from end user point of view or technique point of view, both TSTV and TVoY are the exclusive features in the IPTV solutions.The detailed software design and implementation of TSTV and TVoY provisioning tool is the core part of this thesis. UML modeling and OOAD method are used when the system is under design. And also it's easy to program by using the strength of JAVA's natural 00 feature, meanwhile JSP and Servlet are used to make the web pages and JDBC is used to access the relational database, i.e. PostgreSQL.TSTV and TVoY provisioning tool is to manipulate the enhanced electronic program guide (EPG) which mark the program's TSTV and TVoY related attributes. The enhanced EPG will be synchronized to backend middleware server, after the parsing the backend middleware server will schedule the video server to record the live TV's program via the network personal video recording adaptor. Meanwhile the enhanced EPG will be downloaded to STB according to the related subscribed information. The middleware client in STB will parse the enhanced EPG and does video on demand when end user switch to TSTV mode from live TV mode according to the algorithm result of current channel's program, current time, i.e. recorded file name in video server.
