Prediction coding is one of the classic graphic coding technologies, and it has high compression efficiency by exploiting the correlation between consecutive video frames. The motion-compensated temporal prediction coding method is one of the key factors of the success of video coding standards.With the development of VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration) technology, the hardware implementation of real-time video processing with high computation demand becomes easier. It is becoming the tendency to realize video compression technology in VLSI.In this paper, the VLSI implementation of inter-frame-prediction is studied. The algorithms of inter-frame-prediction towards VLSI-implementation are discussed and a series of optimized algorithms are proposed based on the full-search motion estimation method. Fast motion estimation algorithms which are suitable for VLSI-implementation are also discussed.VLSI architecture of inter-frame-prediction is proposed in this paper. Architecture of data path and controller are studied separately. In the data path design, the hardware implementation for variable block size block-matching motion estimation is discussed in detail and the different hardware architectures under speed-priority rule and area-priority rule are introduced sep??ately. In the controller module, two different control, strategies have been introduced which are Finite State Machine (FSM) control strategy and Micro Code control strategy. The characteristics of both strategies arc analyzed and a mixed control strategy is proposed using FSM and micro code.The ardware architecture propo??d in this paper works at 100MHz clock frequenc) and can match the real time demand of the 720×576@25Hz' format video signal processing and is prog??nmable in selecting the motion estimation algorithm by using different micro codes. By applying fast search motion estimation algorithm or increasing the PE number, the architecture can process real-time high definition video sequences.
