In the present time, children live in a society where mass media has being developed and various kinds of information infiltrates children's daily lives by means of plentiful communication. Electronic media, especially television, plays an important part in the process of children growing up. Although television provide a convenient condition for children to improve cognitive and adaptability, detrimental content flooding television endangers psychological and physical health of children. The researches of television influencing children lead more and more television workers,educationists, psychologists and sociologists to pay close attention. Cultivation theory, one of the important communication effects theories, continuously affects the recognition of the mass media, especially television in the last thirty years. Cultivation theory are different from effects theories and quantitative research, which reveals unobtrusively influence of television viewing to people' cognition and provides an important theoretical instrument.Native cultivation research from theory introduction to empirical investigation is very weak, in comparison with positively concern to traditional empirical effects theories, and native study hasn't fused cultivation theory and television and children research. So this thesis try to draw support from cultivation theory to study function of television viewing to children, in order to broaden category of cultivation analysis and provide a new theoretical field of vision. Today our society establishes progressively scientific children conception and more respect children's rights and interests;this research has intense practical significance. For this, my thesis will be divided into five parts to discuss:The first part is preface, which introduces the current survey for the cultivation research of home and abroad, the scholars' discourse about it and the purpose of this thesis.Part II discusses the relation of the mutual function of children and television, and demonstrates the subjective significance of children to television and the rewrite of television to children.Part III interprets the cultural function of television to children. This chapter first introduces the development of cultivation theory and then discusses the relation of cultivation and cognition.Part IV selects television violence and stereotype of gender to analyze the cultivation function, and then demonstrates the influence of television to children's cognition.Part V draws on the experience of other countries in the light of the present situation and question of Chinese television, and then tries to bring up three feasible countermeasure and scheme: grading the television content >. establishing children channels and cultivating television education.In the epilogue, I will emphasize once more the important significance of the cultivation research in children and television study, then take the initiative in establishing high grade television culture and safeguard the precious conception of childhood.
