ASON (Automatically Switched Optical Network) enhances thetraditional Optical network by a control plane. The control plane is a set ofcommunicating entities that implements signaling and routing mechanisms,which allow the dynamic network resource configuration and the automaticset-up and release of end-to-end connections based on client requests. Sincethe control plane has been introduced to ASON, the Optical transport networkmanagement is evolved from traditional network resource management to theintegrated management of the control plane layer and the underlying transportplane.Consideration for scalability of the network, hierarchical routing isnecessary in control plane development. As the hierarchical routing techniqueis adopted, the control plane becomes more intelligent and agile. But at thesame time, ASON becomes more complex with hierarchical routingarchitecture, which brings some new problems to network management.Aiming at these management problems, this dissertation gives a deep study ofASON management.In this paper, the principle and technologies of hierarchical routing areintroduced. Base on discussion of basic management function of ASON andthe feature of hierarchical routing architecture, this dissertation gives somenew management requirement for control plane with hierarchical routingarchitecture.A hybrid management system called tree management system isproposed for hierarchical routing network management. It matches thehierarchical routing architecture, and has characteristics of both centralizedmanagement system and distributed management system. So it is scalable,and facilitates fast and reliable management.Then, a management system is designed for 863 project "Thehierarchical routing technologies for ASON" based on this hybridmanagement architecture. The functional modules of management entities aredesigned. The message format and MIB of SNMP are extended according tomanagement requirements of hierarchical routing. This protocol is adopted tobe the communicating protocol within management plane.Finally, the designed management system is implemented on a 200 nodeASON testbed. The management functions supported by the managementsystem include configuration management, connection management, dynamiclayer and area reconfiguration and fast fault and performance management aredemonstrated on the testbed. And the management system is proved to be fast,reliable and scalable by trial. It is a feasible approach to manage ASON withhierarchical routing architecture.
