Water-quality monitoring and protecting is a great project related to the development of industry and agriculture and people's health, so water-quality monitoring systems made of multiple-parameter measuring play more important role. Nowadays these systems are characteristic of good data communication and store besides high precision and real-time quality. Compared with traditional serial or parallel communication, Universal Serial Bus technology is popular used because of its simple interface, plug and play supporting, easiness to extend, low price, and etc. In the article a research of water-quality monitoring based on USB communication is proposed, this method is easy to implement and has both high performance and an application outlook. The research and application of USB technology in water-quality monitoring system is mainly described in this article. Firstly the characters and the structure of USB including system characters, bus protocol and physical interface are introduced. After that the hardware and software research method is proposed in detail aiming at USB data communication, including the general method of circuit design, Firmware and driver programming, then analyze the foundation and points of each water quality parameter, and on the basis of this design the structure of system hardware and software. finally adopting USB data communication as a module in water-quality monitoring system, the hardware and software design of the system are described and the whole article is summarized. The USB scheme has been used to the practice of water-quality monitoring system successfully, and has got satisfactory effect. In addition, the scheme proposed can be regarded as a base for further development, and used into more practices.
