DVD servo signal processing is an important part of DVD system. It is mainly in charge of servo control, modulation, demodulation, decode, encode and correct etc. In the process of system working, DVD servo signal processing needs large buffer to support the smooth data transmission, so the effective management for the buffer plays an important role in the servo signal processing normal working. The buffer manager designed in this paper is a significant part of the DVD servo chip. It is mainly in charge of managing the buffer outside the chip, controlling the data flow in the chip and insuring fluent data transmission with high speed.The structure of DVD system and DVD data format are analyzed in the paper. Based on the primary functions of the DVD servo signal processing, it is given that the system structure of DVD servo chip, which is compatible CD and DVD and also has disc writing function. The storage format of data in buffer and the plan of buffer management are designed according to the DVD data format. For the structure of the chip, the buffer manager is designed. The RTL design of the module is completed using Verilog.This paper constructs the function simulation platform for buffer manager and the whole system, and validates the design on the platform after the RTL design. The RTL code is translated to gate level netlist after synthesizing, mapping, layout and timing simulation for Vertex-II FPGA. In the process of realizing the design, they are given that clock management method and timing constrain design method for the benefit of data transmission stably.Using FPGA as the circuit prototype of the chip, this paper designs the FPGA validate platform for the digital circuit of the chip. After integrating the buffer manager and other module in the chip, it can play VCD and DVD fluently based on the FPGA validate platform.Through the validation based on FPGA platform, this design can totally satisfy the requirement for high-speed data transmission of the chip and realize the efficient and flexible management of the large buffer outside the chip. It plays an important role in the work of DVD system.
