With networks got more popular, their architecture becomes more and more complex. It is important to research and implement a good network management system because it can help computer network run more efficiently and reliably. On the basis of this author's development work in SeeLink Network Management System (in short, SeeLink NMS), along with the SNMP protocol and MIB, this paper focuses on the research, design and implementation of SeeLink NMS that includes network topology auto-generation (topology automatic discovery, map generation and layout), network traffic monitoring and failure detecting. The following are detailed contents: Explore and implement network topology automatic discovery. This paper gives out a new discovering method against topology generation failure caused by incomplete route table information. The new method makes detecting and distinguishing to network devices and has solved the problem perfectly. Explore and implement network topology map generation and layout with well-designed algorithms and programming to make topology map more clear. Examine the traffic data source, data collecting and traffic forming methods, mining these data for evaluation of network running performance. Design and implement failure detecting based on two types of data collecting mechanism of trap and polling so as to make trade-off to NMS real-time performance and lower network overhead better. SeeLink NMS has passed testing successfully in Weng Feng School of Nantong University campus network, and in Nantong Road Management Agency network which overlaying Nantong area with one city and six counties. The system had been put into use in Nantong Tumour Treatment Professional Hospital since January 2005 and in Natong Real Estate Monitoring Agency since March 2005. Till now, the system has been running smoothly and showing a good performance.
