Non-ferrous metal smelting industry is the important industry for the national economy; Aluminum electrolysis is a major component of non-ferrous metal smelting industry. Electrolytic aluminum production requires stable enough big DC current as it's energy source, the DC current provided by the rectifier unit. Rectifier unit is the modern power electronic rectifier equipment; it uses modern power electronics technology to convert the frequency AC current to DC current, to meet the energy needs of electrolyzes. In the rectification process, Rectifier unit generated a lot of harmonic currents, and these harmonic currents run into the power grid, and have an extremely adverse impact to the power system stable and safe operation of electrical equipment and power quality. Therefore, they must be to be governed and reformed.Passive Power Filter (PPF) is the main device which is widely used in power system harmonics of control currently. PPF has a simple configuration and structure, low cost, convenient maintenance and mature technology and so on. Thus, PPF has been widely used in the actual industrial production.This paper discusses principle of harmonic currents produced, discusses harmonic control methods which is commonly used, and analyze the traditional configuration of PPF parameters. At the end this paper proposes parameter optimization methods based on genetic algorithm, and research the optimization of configuration method. Based on those work, the paper introduces the Harmonic Filter Configuration System which is developed for professional application. At the end, this paper give a group of engineering data calculated by the Harmonic Filter Configuration System, after check the parameters of passive power filters, we can see the results were very good, fully meet the various targets requirements.
