Along with the development of society and economy and the gradual increase of nonlinear loads, more and more harmonics flow in the power system and deteriorate the power quality. At the same time, better power quality is required by users, so people have paid more attention to harmonic problem. Harmonic problem has become an important research field of power system. In recent years, the harmonic theory, the harmonic control strategy, research of power filters, harmonic measurement and practice of harmonic filtering all have made great advances.This paper analyzes the harmonic control strategy, the common equipments, harmonic model of power system, methods for harmonic flow calculation, introduces the common harmonic measuring technique and its advantage, and analyzes the harmonic flow of specific example using the method of modeling.The particle swarm optimization algorithm is a kind of recent intelligent optimization methods which has less parameters,simple principle and fast convergence rate, etc. Filter configuration problem is a more complicated nonlinear optimization problem of many constraints that is hard to solve by direct modeling. Based on the harmonic flow, this paper presents filter configuration algorithm that optimizes power filters, parameters using pso algorithm. This filter configuration algorithm regards filter expenses as objective function, and regards the harmonic voltage distortion rate and the safe operation of the filters as constraint conditions. According to the filter configuration algorithm, this paper writes the corresponding passive filter configuration program, active filter configuration program, and filter configuration program with MATLAB.By analyzing and computing standard example and local example using each program for configuring power filters, this paper acquires the optimal solutions , contrasts the harmonic distortion rates of the examples before and after filter configuration, illustrates the availability of optimizing power filters, parameters using pso algorithm and program presented by this paper and gets related conclusions. This paper also compares the standard particle swarm optimization algorithm with genetic algorithm in terms of performance. At last, this paper discusses about further study about research fields that are related to harmonics.
