Recent advances in communication technologies especially in wireless network are facilitating the emergency of new classes of network organization. Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) is one of the most important. It is a self-organizing network which composed by mobile nodes, using wireless transmission without the supports of stationary infrastructure and centralized administration. It's easy to deploy, but many potential problems exist, for example, resources are strictly limited, topology is dynamic, the performance and security goals are not satisfied and so on. For these reasons, many researches focus on its protocol design. Due to its dynamic property, automatic service discovery is obviously crucial for MANET, and become an indispensable component in protocol stack of MANET. This thesis focuses on the study of light weight service discovery protocol and its mechanisms for MANET.In fact, route discovery protocol and service discovery protocol all belongs to resource location protocol. Similar mechanisms exist in these two protocols. Traditional solutions don't pay attention to this fact. As a result, the mechanisms are executed repeatedly, redundant data are produced and the performance slows down. In order to solve this problem, we propose a ZRP-based service discovery protocol– CZRP, which blend seamlessly with route discovery protocol. In CZRP's zone, active route and service discovery is adopted, otherwise, reactive route and service discovery is adopted. Since the closely relationship between the route protocol and the service discovery protocol, these mechanisms lead to network delay reduced and performance improved. Especially no additional cost exists if services have started before the network topology is formed, except the size of control packets grows. Since MANET is very susceptible to security threats, we propose an enhanced protocol SCZRP based on CZRP, which using symmetric encryption technology to support secure authentication. Service authentication process is started when service discovery request is begin; the process is completed when the service is really used.Through the process, service requesters and providers can be authenticated and services can be used credibly and securely. Besides these, common nodes can also be authenticated by providing a secure authentication service in our mechanism.Quantitative analysis and simulation result also show that it's feasible and effective to implement service discovery protocol based on existed route protocols using cross-layer design methodology.
