The explosive growing of wireless communication system has driven the development of digital video broadcast systems. After the DVB standard of European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), America and Japan has released their own standard, and China has brought its ABS-S standard recently. This thesis aims to design a wideband low-power voltage-controlled oscillator for digital video broadcast systems.First, the thesis goes into a discussion on the blocks of phase-locked loop frequency synthesizers and the fundamental realization of them. Second, the theory and implementation of LC voltage-controlled oscillator is given, and dual-core technique is used to solve the trade-off between frequency range and power dispassion. Third, the phase noise requirement is derived from system, phase noise models are summarized and methods to improve phase noise are given too.The designed wideband low-power voltage-controlled oscillator is implemented by TSMC 0.18μm CMOS aluminum process. The frequency range is from 2.2GHz to 4.8GHz. Power dispassion is about 3.7mA for VCO core and about 1.6mA for VCO buffer. When oscillating at 4.4GHz, it achieves a phase noise performance of-72.01dBc/Hz,-98.55dBc/Hz and-120.7dBc/Hz at 10KHz,100KHz and 1MHz offsets respectively. When oscillating at 2.2GHz, it achieves a phase noise performance of -83.02dBc/Hz,一106.7dBc/Hz and一127.4dBc/Hz at 10KHz,100KHz and 1MHz offsets respectively.
