Industrial Ethernet technology is widely used in the field of industrial control. Compared with the traditional fieldbus, it has advantages such as wide range of applications, high speed, low cost, and strong capability of resource sharing. Furthermore, industrial Ethernet adopts self-healing technology in order to ensure transmission reliability.This paper introduces the popular Ethernet self-healing technologies. One kind of them is inherited from the traditional Ethernet ring protection, such as STP/RSTP protocol. Another kind is the ring redundancy with fast self-healing feature, such as EAPS, R-APS protocol. There are also some private redundancy technologies owned by industrial control equipment manufacturers, such as GarrettCom S-Ring,Korenix RDH.This paper suggests improvements to the above techniques, and presents a fast self-healing mechanism based on the least times of transmission path switching strategy. By unique backup port selection, it can avoid unnecessary transmission path switching on repeated failure point and ring recovery, so that self-healing can be achieved seamlessly. This paper focuses on the mechanism principle and modular design, and then implements it on the hardware platform composed of Freescale MC9S12NE64 MCU and Marvell 88E6063 switch chip. From the test results, it can meet the design requirements. Finally, this article forecasts the development trends of industrial Ethernet fast self-healing technology.
